Of interest around Bath:
William Pitt (the Elder) was affectionately known as "The Great Commoner" for his refusal to accept a title. Following a distinguished military career during which he notably made a fortune selling a huge diamond to the Duke of Orléans, Pitt rose through political ranks to become the Southern Secretary and virtual head of government and was the appointment chosen member for Bath. William Pitt resided at 7, the Circus where a plaque commemorating his residence may today be seen.
